Preparing for Medical School Through Education, Experience, and Purpose-Driven Goals

My career goal is to become a family medicine physician, providing compassionate, holistic care to individuals and underserved communities. To reach this goal, I plan to apply to medical school after completing additional prerequisite courses. I also aim to gain more clinical experience through internships and certifications, such as the Clinical Medical Professional program I'm currently enrolled in with MedCerts.

I believe I’m uniquely qualified for this path due to my academic background in health sciences and psychology, hands-on experience through internships, and involvement in extracurriculars like the IU Pre-Med Club and Biology Club. I’ve also built a strong support network, including mentors, advisors, and healthcare professionals who have guided me and continue to inspire my journey.

After health sciences senior capstone class, I plan to complete my internship hours, finish my certification, and enroll as a non-degree student to complete remaining prerequisites. In the short term (within the next year), I will prepare for and take the MCAT, strengthen my medical school application, and continue volunteering in healthcare settings. My long-term goal is to enter medical school, complete residency, and begin practicing family medicine. Every step I take now is focused on building the academic, clinical, and personal foundation needed to succeed in this career.

Reflection of Health Sciences Senior Capstone

During my years in the Health Sciences program, I have advanced from a mere knowledge of patient care to a more global understanding that includes public health, clinical systems, and community well being. Courses in program evaluation, ethics and rehabilitation were particularly impactful, allowing me to look at how social and systemic issues affect health. I developed my communication and problem-solving abilities by working in groups and completing external projects, including my capstone experience in which I worked with a client to create an age-sensitivity educational plan.

I had a lot on my plate with coursework, internships, certifications, but I also learned to: time manage, stay organized, and ask for help. These struggles have actually proven to develop me in terms of steadfastness and confidence, that I can overcome the burdens of it resulted in real world pressure. This track has solidified my mission to practice as a family physician and kindled a new passion for public health education and care in the community.

I hope to apply what I have learned by taking the rest of my coursework and beginning to prepare for medical school, and finding hands-on work experience in a local community health arena. This program has built a perfect cornerstone for my future career in healthcare.

Research Methodology: Skills & Knowledge Gained

Throughout my coursework in research methodology, I developed valuable skills essential for health and rehabilitation sciences. One of the most important skills I learned was how to construct a solid research question using the PICO(T) framework, which helps guide evidence-based practice. I also became proficient in outlining a research study—starting from defining the problem, identifying variables, creating a hypothesis, and choosing appropriate research designs (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods).

I practiced literature reviews using scholarly databases such as PubMed and CINAHL to gather peer-reviewed evidence. I learned to assess sources for credibility, relevance, and bias. This process enhanced my ability to think critically and synthesize findings from multiple studies into a coherent argument or summary.

Another key skill I gained was understanding ethical research practices, including the importance of informed consent, IRB approval, and protecting participant confidentiality. These practices are crucial in maintaining professionalism and integrity in health research.

Application to My Future in Healthcare: Research Methodology

This course also strengthened my skills in data interpretation and analysis. I gained basic experience working with statistical tools and interpreting p-values, confidence intervals, and other key indicators to evaluate the significance and reliability of research findings. These tools will help me assess the quality of evidence in future clinical decision-making.

Additionally, I improved my academic writing and presentation skills by summarizing research findings and outlining proposals in structured formats. I now feel more confident in contributing to research initiatives and quality improvement projects as I pursue a career in family medicine.

Personal Statements and Goals

I am dedicated to pursuing a career in Family Medicine, focusing on providing holistic and patient-centered care. My goal is to attend medical school and serve underserved communities, addressing both physical and mental health needs. Through continuous learning, community engagement, and clinical practice, I aim to make a positive impact on patients’ lives.
